The 2024 Breeders' Cup will take place on November 1st and 2nd at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in California. Known for its scenic location by the Pacific Ocean "Where The Turf Meets The Surf" as old Bing Crosby once crooned.
It’s a later start for us here in the UK again as they are racing about as far away as they can on the West Coast over in California. The first of the Breeders’ Cup races is due off at 9.45pm our time on Friday and then 7.00 pm on Saturday with both days running into the early hours of the next day here; it’ll be a long couple of days with some late nights so get your beauty sleep in.
A couple of track facts to keep in mind over the weekend. The Dirt track is an oval of a mile with chutes for races over 7f and 10f. The distance from the home turn to the finishing post is 919ft on the Dirt track, the shortest Breeders’ Cup home straight in history. The Turf course is an oval of 7f, with a diagonal straight chute for races over 1m½f and 9f contests. If you’re a bit sad, as I am, and like to have one you can view or download the official Programme for Friday and Saturday at: www.breederscup.com/program
If like me you are here in the UK rather than across the pond in California you can still enjoy every race of the Breeders’ Cup weekend as Sky Racing will be all over it showing all the action of course as well as having plenty of special features in the build-up. ITV Racing sadly are nowhere near as involved in 2024 as they were last year but will be showing a couple of hours of the action on Saturday including the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
I nicked a few quid last year finding 7 of the 14 winners; hopefully I have a decent few again this year. The beers are in the fridge, the hot dogs are ready and I have pretzels in case of a snack emergency. It is often said of Del Mar that it’s 'a place where nobody's in a hurry but the horses' so sit back, relax and enjoy a couple of evenings of top-class horse racing.Breeders' Cup Future Stars Friday
