Best bets for the horse racing this weekend around the globe

I mentioned on the Glorious Goodwood page that a few of the big name jockeys are missing from the Downs on Friday and the reason is some big-money prizes out in the States. One of the rising stars of the weighing room Billy Loughnane rides for Charlie Appleby at HQ later but the horse in question Desert Flower is long odds-on; nice for Billy the Kid but no betting opportunity.

Best bets for the horse racing at Saratoga Saturday

Ryan Moore and William Buick are both over the pond in America for the evening to ride for their bosses in the big money races at Saratoga. The Grade One 1m1½f Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes at 8.21 our time is the race of the day. Diego Velazquez is over from Ballydoyle with Ryan Moore in the saddle having won a G.3 back in Ireland last time. He has been a frustrating sort and I am not convinced he is as good as the betting would suggest. Legend Of Time started his year with three wins at Meydan and scored on his second US appearance when getting up close home in the G.2 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Aqueduct in May. He got no luck in running in the G.1 Belmont Derby  last time and will be looking to put the record straight here. Charlie Appleby said this week “Legend Of Time didn’t get the rub of the green in the Belmont Derby, but he came out of the race well. He has some valuable experience of racing in the US now, and hopefully we can work out a better trip here. He should be a big player.” I am on at 100-30

The second race of interest at Saratoga is the Grade Two 5½f Grade Two Troy Stakes. Mischief Magic re-opposes top US sprinter Cogburn having finished fifth behind the same horse over the course and distance in June’s G.1 Jaipur Stakes, a race in which the winner recorded the fastest time over an extended five furlongs in North America. Winner of the G.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2022, Mischief Magic has produced a string of solid efforts in the UAE, Qatar and United States this year, including filling the runner-up spot in Keeneland’s G2 Shakertown Stakes. Charlie Appleby added about this one “Mischief Magic has course experience and heads into this in great order. He was drawn wide in the Jaipur and has a better spot here on the inside. I’m sure he will run another solid race, although he just needs a bit of luck and things to fall his way if he is to win.” No-one has priced-up at the time of writing so grab the best price you can.

Best bet for the horse racing at Dusseldorf Sunday

The race of the day in Germany is the Group One 1m3f 166th Henkel-Preis der Diana - German Oaks at 2.45. I Tipped Darnation to win the German 1,000 Guineas back in May and the Karl Burke trained filly duly obliged. She is back out in Germany for this and can be backed again. "Darnation has travelled over really well," said Burke earlier this week. "She probably looks as well as she has all year and she's been training really well. The ground will be fine and I think the trip will be well within her compass. She stayed on really well and galloped through the line over ten furlongs last time, plus we've got the best jockey in the race as well. We're looking forward to it and I think she's got a big chance." I have some of the 9-4 this morning.

Best bet for the horse racing at Deauville Sunday

I noted William Buick was booked to ride the Jane Chapple-Hyam trained Mill Stream in the 6½f Group One ARC Prix Maurice de Gheest. It's his only ride on the day and it's quite a trip from New York to North-West France so clearly they must fancy this ones chances. Winner of the G.1 6f July Cup Stakes at HQ last time the colt looks capable of following-up in this. Paddy Power were the standout 9-2 Saturday morning and I have that; as short as 11-4 with Hills and 5-2 Skybet!  Chapple-Hyam said this week "He's in very good order. He travelled out on Friday to Deauville. I'm looking forward to running him over six and a half furlongs, we know he likes the track and he travels well, so we're expecting a big show." Shouldvebeenaring can run another big race but this is a step-up on the G.3 here won here recently whilst the so far unbeaten Lazzat is tried at the top level for the first time and can't be ignored.

Be lucky
