Best bet for the horseracing at Meydan Friday 23rd February 2024 - The Dubai Carnival

It being Friday it is all about Meydan and the Dubai Carnival for Triple G. There are a few short ones on the card and it might be a day for a multiple of some sort if that's your thing. I fancy three on the card on what should prove another fruitful day for Godolphin - I am doubling up two of them myself.

Best bets for the horseracing at Meydan

The Group Three UAE Oaks looks all about Manama Gold and she is priced as if defeat is unthinkable. The 1m1f Group Two Balanchine Stakes at 2.40 should go to Sapphire Seas who completed a four-timer in a Listed race at Yarmouth when last seen in September. I have tipped the Frankel filly more than once and expect to see her picking up plenty of black type this season. 4-7 is short but she looks a good thing as they say. The main danger looks stablemate English Rose, second here over a mile last month. Charlie Appleby told the Godolphin website this week “Sapphire Seas looks the filly they all have to beat. She was a good winner of a Listed race on her latest start and her preparation has gone well. It’s her first appearance of the year but she looks in good order and this will hopefully be a springboard to a nice European campaign. English Rose has definitely come forward since the Cape Verdi and I feel that she will appreciate racing over nine furlongs. Stepping back up in trip should suit Shining Jewel as well and we are applying a tongue-tie to her.” I have put the selection in a double with Siskany in the Group Three 1m6f  Nad Al Sheba Trophy at 5.00. The six-year-old is 4-7 best but looks a solid punt. He got up in the Listed Al Khail Trophy last month and has a great record out here. Charlie Appleby said this week “Siskany came out of the Al Khail Trophy well and his record around Meydan speaks for itself. We are hoping that he can produce another strong performance and book his ticket for the Dubai Gold Cup." The double pays 6-4 (give or take a penny)

Naval Power was my ante-post punt for the Derby last year but having won the Jumeirah Classic Stakes over track and trip last January he wasn't seen again all last year. Gelded since last seen the four-year-old has had his problems but the fact he remains in training at four, especially now gelded, suggests the team thinks the potential remains in the son of Teofilo. Charlie Appleby said of him this week  “Naval Power had a few minor setbacks last year but has been training well. This looks a nice starting point to see where we are before taking him back to Europe." He gets a couple of pounds from a couple here and at 9-2 is worth a punt to pick up where he left off last year. The ever-consistent Ottoman Fleet is the pick of William Bucik and is feared off the back of another fair effort in the Jebel Hatta last month with match fitness on his side.
